AMPS Investment Cycle

Investment Management Cycle

Major projects offer unique challenges to clients/sponsors at the front-end of the investment cycle.  AMPS recognises this phenomenon and creates a matrix that combines this with the management cycle – the Investment Management Cycle.

AMPS paradigm breaks down the Investment management cycle into '6 Tile', that reflect the significance of decisions and level of control in a two-dimensional matrix of investment and management. Each 'Tile' has a parallel function with key aims and objectives under a 'stage-gate' decision point process.

For example, during the strategic planning phase, we focus on multiple option definition and expected return on investment including 'triple bottom line' benefits, of social, economic, and environmental.

Vertical Alignment

Within each ‘Tile’ there are 9 components and 4 stages. AMPS vertically aligns all processes that are required to work together and share information for a successful major project. Each process has a set of required inputs and required outputs for each stage.

Each process has a process flow diagram for each stage, A to D. The work process map activity descriptions form the basis of the activities in the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Process maps also act as a framework for best practice, guidelines and work instructions.

Stage Reports

Work process maps set out what needs to be done and in what sequence, in a clear and systematic way. They are an effective communication tool and provide a foundation for a common understanding of the management process.

The division of the process into components and stages results in each sub-tile being relatively uncomplicated and serves as an excellent action plan for the team manager. The work process map activity descriptions form the basis of the activities in the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Once duration and effort have been estimated it forms the basis of the Level 2 Master Schedule. The process maps also act as a framework for best practice, guidelines and work instructions with user guides linked electronically to the process nodes.

The layout of a Level 2 Work Process Map features an inputs text box in the top left corner, which lists the inputs to the process (outputs from the preceding stage). Inputs from and outputs to other component processes in the stage are represented in colour coded bands in ‘connected processes’ shape. The deliverable is produced in the stage or listed in an outputs text box in the top right corner.

The input, output and connected process objects are all dynamically linked. By clicking on them the user can navigate right to left between stages or up and down between components. Nodes that contain a link symbol have attached documents which can be opened by clicking on the link icon or by selecting them from a drop down menu that is displayed by passing the mouse over the link icon.
